Weekend Race Report 27 June 2010
It was another busy weekend for races. To start the weekend off, in chilly and cloudy Seattle, Linda Hilts went down to compete in the hilly Rock n Roll Seattle marathon and Barb Hinds had a PB in the half marathon. With over 21,000 finishers, both had great showings. Word on the street is “it was a tough race”.
In Vancouver on Sunday, we had a dozen people registered for the Scotia Half Marathon running from UBC to Stanley Park. It was a bit on the cool side with a mist of rain. Great running weather, but, when does summer arrive?
Dave Burrows, Chris Chan, Sukhal Dulay, Julian Forman, Roger Keatley, Walter Kwan, George Lau, Tracy Marshall, Ira Sy, and Joel and Linda Waithman all had great races and there were a couple of PB’s recorded by the group. We’ve included a picture of the Waithman clan at the finish.
Also on Sunday, with some beautiful weather that hasn’t quite made it to the wet (oops thats West) coast, in Couer d’Alene, Brian Flett, Susan Gelinas and Stephen Ptucha reaffirmed themselves as “Ironman”. They had great times in all three disciplines and both Brian and Stephen cut more than three quarters of an hour off previous PB’s. With about 2,700 athletes competing, they all finished well up in both the standings and their respective age categories. Great job.

Ride2Survive Report from Ben
Here’s a message from Ben Hsu about his recent Ride2Survive ride – a 400km, one day cycling trip from Kelowna, BC to Delta BC.
Hello friends:
Wow, what a day, but first & foremost, I’d like to thank all those have supported me for the ride this year, it was by far the toughest thing I’ve ever attempted to date, it was such a humbling experience, to share the same goal with 94 riders to kick cancer’s butt, none of the rider are surgeons, doctors or oncologists, we all feel helpless when it comes to doing our part, the ride was such a great outlet for us to feel that we are doing something to make a difference.
The day started with a wake up call at 2:15am, we were shuttled to the starting line at 3:15am, where we got our bikes, gear and ourselves ready, we departed Kelowna [Read more →]

Another busy weekend for races and the rains held off, the clouds kept it cooler and summer is just around the corner.

On Friday night out at UBC we had Amanda Hill, Dave Burrows, Rob Herron and Dan McLaren running the 10K double loop. All had great races.

On Sunday for the New Balance (Victoria) Half Iron we had a group of 6 including a first time Half Iron for Jan Frail. Trudy Harris made it to the podium with a 2nd place in her age category. Rounding out the group were Marinus Waterberg, Fay Waterberg, George Tiller and in the relay Joanne Rooney (with Tess doing the run portion). All had great races. Thanks to the support on route.
Congratulations to everyone on another successful race weekend.

Weekend Race Report 13 June 2010
It was a quiet weekend for races. Tracy Marshall was on the island (with some great weather) for the Edge 2 Edge Marathon. The marathon runs from Tofino to Ucluelet (crossing beaches, the Pacific Rim National Park and along the Wild Pacific Trail). A great day for a race and a second place age category finish for Tracy. Congratulations.

Weekend Race Report 6 June 2010
Another busy weekend on the west coast for races.
Down in San Diego, Erin Lee had a great race at the inaugural half for the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego marathon. As this is her second Rock ‘n’ Roll half this year, she gets a bit of extra medal for completing two halfs.

Tracy “12 in 12″ Marshall was in Washington State at the beautiful and scenic North Olympic Discovery Marathon and had another great marathon run.

And, we had a large contingency from the SAA competing in the Oliver Half Ironman (for a couple of members this was their first Half Iron). Leslie Burgess, Jackie Davidson, Andrew Do, Barb Hinds, Michelle LaPorte, Andrew Palaniak, Alan Pearse, Les Pereira, Barton Pietras and Rob Sutcliffe all had great races. Congratulations to all.
And, here are a couple of photos from the run portion of Oliver today.
Congratulations to everyone on another great weekend of racing.

Weekend Race Report 30 May 2010
Busy weekend for races with the Lees Trail Tri on Saturday and on Sunday was the Calgary Half Marathon, Ottawa Marathon, the Subaru Shawnigan Lake Triathlon and the South Okanagan “half corked” Marathon.
Tracy Baisley and Joel Lemaire both competed in the Lees Trail Triathlon. Tracy did quite well, and Joel came in 5th overall and 2nd in his age category in this inclusive, fun and non-intimidating triathlon.
In spite of snow and near freezing temperatures, Jenny Harris braved it all and had a great run in the Calgary Half marathon.
Linda Hilts and Jim Fox ran the 5K race in Ottawa on Saturday in some extreme heat. Linda won her age category and had a Personal Best, then on Sunday, it was overcast and the temperature held out in the high-teens for the marathon where Linda PB’ds and re-qualified for Boston.
At the Shawnigan Lake Half Iron Triathlon, in spite of weather challenges (who does those forecasts anyways?) it was a day for SAA on the podium, Susan Gelinas and Brian Flett both came in second place in their respective age categories and George Tiller was third in his category.
Up in the Okanagan, Linda Waithman had a great time running as a Wine Diva Fairy and Walter Kwan went out a little more seriously at the 1st Annual South Okanagan Half Corked Marathon, having a few glasses of wine along the way. This is a fun race Inspired by the world-famous Marathon du Médoc in Bordeaux, France. Shorter, but just as much fun. Walter finished 7th overall and 3rd in his age category

Julian Forman, Les Pereira and Grand Yeh (in spite of suffering from a cold all week) competed in this Sprint event on the Holiday Monday and all did well. Congratulations to everyone.

Weekend Race Report 22 May 2010
A quiet weekend for races. It was a cool morning in Penticton but that didn’t stop Rob Herron who came in first place in his age category at the Peach City Half Marathon and he also took 7 seconds off his Vancouver Marathon Half time from 3 weeks ago. And, Rob also qualified for a guaranteed entry to the NYC Marathon in both these races.
And on Saturday, Benju Chu was in Chicago and ran the 80km (50mile) Des Plaines River Trail race, nice and cool temperatures for a race day with beautiful course. There had been severe rainfall last week so there was some flooding and lots of cold, wet feet. Benji had a good race and beat his previous 50 mile (80Km) by over 3 hours.
Congratulations guys.

Additional Race Report – 16 May 2010
It’s inevitable that I would miss someone along the way. Special mention is due to Jackie Davidson who, during the UBC Triathlon hit a squirrel on her bike and wiped out, but pulled herself and her bike off the road and managed to finish 1st in her age group. Good job and congratulations Jackie.

Race Report 16 May 2010
Another great weekend for racing. And, another busy weekend for the SAA. Even the weather held out (maybe a bit on the warm side – but great preparation for upcoming summer races).
On Saturday, Pat Malaviarachchi was running the BC coast from Squamish to Whistler in the 50 km Tenderfoot Boogie trail race. He tied for 3rd place overall and won his age category and winning a bottle of wine bottled by the race director from the vineyard he used to own.
Closer to home, we had 11 members take on the UBC Triathlon. Word on the street is that it’s a much better time of the year to have a triathlon then the normal March rain/snow and cold. Marinus Waterberg, Barton Pietras, Jimmy Chong, Leslie Burgess, Fay Waterberg, Jan Frail, Barb Hinds and Michelle LaPorte all had great races in the Olympic distance as did Dan McLaren and Quanny Van in the Sprint and Joel Lemaire won the Short with a time of 51:54.
Congratulations to all on a great race weekend.
