Race Report 12 September 2010
The Gran Fondo (meaning long distance or great endurance) from Vancouver to Whistler along the Sea to Sky Highway was held on Saturday, September 11, 2010. The 120km ride has a net gain of 650 meters with 2,400 meters of climbing and 1,750 meters of downhill. There was a large group from the club (hope I didn’t miss anyone) including Ben Hsu, Brian Flett, Joel Waithman, George Tiller, Jackie Davidson, Pat Malaviarachchi, Les Pereira, Nicole Scott and Andrew Palaniak. What a great day, but, I heard the hills going into Whistler were quite the challenge.
Meanwhile in Bellingham at the Fairhaven Runners 15K race, Leslie Burgess, Susan Gelinas, Calvin Gehlen and Walter Kwan all had great races. It’s a bit hillier than was expected, but personal bests were the theme for the day (all had a PB) – not to mention the t-shirt included with the very inexpensive race entry.
And Tracy Marshall headed down to Burlington, Washington on Sunday for the Skagit Flats Marathon. Another good race in Tracy’s “training” schedule, and, unlike Vancouver, there was only intermittent/light showers for them to contend with.Â
Also today was the Coho 14km run. This incredible point to point 14 km journey starts from Kitsilano Beach, takes you through Vanier Park along the seawall, then over the Burrard Street Bridge along the English Bay seawall to Second Beach in Stanley Park, and finally, over the Lion’s Gate Bridge and into Ambleside Beach Park to the birthplace of the North Shore Coho salmon. Warren Dueck had a great race.
Congratulations to everyone on another great race weekend.
